Welcome to Year 5

Welcome to our Year 5 page. We hope you have had a lovely half term and are ready and raring for lots of exciting learning over the next 8 weeks!

In Literacy, we will be looking at Dragons. We will read a variety of poems about dragons and create our own based on a dragon hatching from an egg. We will be writing newspaper reports and diary entries based on our Literacy Novel of ‘How to train your dragon’ by Cressida Crowell. We will deepen our understanding of the novel through drama activities too.

In Maths, the children will be working on multiplication and division. This will involve finding multiples, factors and common factors of numbers, identifying, naming and determining prime number up to 100, understanding square and cube numbers, multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000 and using a range of strategies such as grid method and column method. We will also be dividing by 10,100 and 1000; and dividing 3 and 4-digit numbers using number bonds, long and short division and mental division. They will then move onto statistics where we will read and respond to information in tables an interpret information on line graphs. We will be using the Maths No Problem workbooks as well as plenty of manipulatives to support us in our understanding. We also use the White Rose Hub schemes to challenge our thinking further.

In Geography, we will finish our unit on rivers. We will be learning the features of a river and what section of a river these features are located. We will also learn about erosion and deposition and how humans use rivers in everyday life.

In History, we will be learning about the Anglo-Saxons, Scots and Vikings.  We will look at where they came from and where in Britain they settled; and how life in Britain changes as a result. We will look at the influence on the English language and examine artefacts to draw conclusions on life in Anglo-Saxon Britain. We will look at the lives of Anglo Saxons focusing on village life, jobs, beliefs and gods. We will then look at the invasions of the Vikings looking at significant events from the period and ordering them on a timeline. We will learn about Rulers and kings during the ‘Viking Age’ and their influence on British history. We will look at the justice system and compare and contrast crimes to modern day equivalents. We will finish by exploring Viking life, houses, clothing and food.

Please visit this page regularly as it will be updated with photos of our work and links to aid learning. Take a look at our planning documents to find out more about what we will be learning this year.

P.E

Children will require their P.E. kits every Thursday and Friday. They should leave it in school until the half term holiday. This will ensure that they don’t regularly forget their P.E. kit. The children will need either pumps or trainers as the children will participate in outdoor and indoor activities throughout the term. If your child doesn’t have the correct footwear, they may not be able to participate in certain activities, which would have a negative impact on their physical development.

Spellings

Children will be given a spelling list every Wednesday, please ensure your child practices these as they will be tested on these spellings the following week, usually within sentences. To support them further, encourage children to use a dictionary to find their meanings as well as form sentences with the words given.

Learning logs

Children will be given learning log challenges each term which is linked to the work they have been covering throughout the topic. Please look at our homework grid below. It states how many tasks need to be completed. Remember to encourage children to be creative and share their learning in different ways.

Books

Reading books will be changed every Thursday. Please ensure that books and signed reading diaries are in school each Thursday. Library books will be changed every two weeks. It is important that your child reads every evening. This could be done independently or with the help of an adult or older sibling.

TimesTables RockStars

The children have been given logins for Times Tables Rock Stars. They can access the app at home on a laptop or iPad and even get the opportunity to play against the teachers some evenings. Please encourage your child to access the website at home as this will give them much needed practice of the Times Tables they are unsure of.
