Welcome to Year 5T!
Welcome back to another term and our first of 2021. I hope you are looking forward to another term and you have had a great break with your families. I can not wait to hear about what you have all been up to when we are back in school on the 6th January. We have lots of exciting work to do this term so I hope you are ready Year 5. You have worked so hard in our autumn term so I am looking forward to our next terms ahead. We are still under COVID guidance but you have done so well with following the new rules in school and our classroom. Here's to another amazing term Year 5!
Please make sure you are looking at Class Dojo and this page regularly for any updates and news. Please have conversations with your children about what we are doing in school and look at our planning documents on here.
To reiterate, if your child has symptoms of COVID-19, please do not bring them to school until they have been tested. If anyone in your household is waiting on test results, please keep your child off until the result has returned and it is negative. If you have had a positive test in the household, please ring the school for advice on self isolation if unsure. Please keep our class bubble and yourselves safe!
Every morning, we will be continuing to practise our fluency, reasoning and problem solving. We will be looking at different questions to help us become more familiar with how to answer mathematical questions in different ways. We have been doing this since September and we are starting to see progress in the children's independence and knowledge.
In Spring 1, we are going to be looking at fractions for our first topic. The children will be looking at developing their understanding of fractions, including improper and mixed numbers. They will also become more confident with finding equivalent fractions. They will also move onto looking at comparing fractions in different forms.
This term, we will looking at a book called Shackleton's journey by William Grill. We will be looking at the book in a lot of detail and be completing different tasks to inspire us to write our end assessment writing, which will be a persuasive speech.
In grammar, we will be focusing on the year 5 objectives throughout the year where appropriate. In spring 2, we will be focusing on parentheses and applying it to our writing to add additional information.
We will continue to revisit previously taught grammar and punctuation from the start of the year and previous years to make sure children improve their confidence.
In Spring 1, we will be learning all about life cycles in science. We will describe the differences in the life cycles of a mammal, an amphibian, an insect and a bird; we will describe the life process of reproduction in some plants and animals; and describe the changes as humans develop to old age.
This term, we will be focusing on the Anglo Saxons. We will be learning about their invasions, how they ruled and other events which occurred during their rule. We will meet some famous individuals in this time period and why they are remembered. We will also look at what it was like to live in this time period.
In Spring 1, we will be looking at art and design. We will be focusing on drawing, painting and collaging. We will look at the work of Dominic Wilcox and use his work as inspiration to create our own.
The children will be given logins for Times Tables Rock Stars. They can access the app at home on a laptop or ipad. Please encourage your child to access the website at home as this will give them much needed practice of the Times Tables they are unsure of. Children will be taking part in TTRS in class 4 times a week.

This year, our P.E lessons will take place on Monday afternoons. The children will not be getting changed for P.E before the lesson. Please ensure your child has suitable clothing and footwear on for school on this day.
Every Friday, your child will be given their new spelling lists out. Please take time to help your child learn these spellings each week. They will be tested on the following Monday. The children will be introduced to different methods to help them learn the spelling rules. To help your child learn their spellings, please encourage them to recap the meaning of words and put them into sentences.
The children will receive homework every week for maths and grammar. The homework they are set will be linked to the work we have done in class that week. The homework will be set and given out on the same day each week to ensure routine for the children. This is to ensure that they continue to improve and demonstrate their understanding of the work taught. Please ensure your child completes their homework and brings it in on time. Try to encourage your child to complete the work independently so I can see what they can do.
Monday: Grammar homework set and due in.
Wednesday: Maths homework set and due in.
Children will be given learning log challenges each term which is linked to the work they have been covering throughout the topic. I will ask for children to bring these in on certain dates to monitor the work they are doing from home. Please ensure your child is completing the tasks and encourage them to present their work in as many different ways as possible.
Children will be given a new reading book every Friday. Please make sure your child's book is read and returned by Thursday. All books will be quarantined for 72 hours before given out again due to Coivd-19. Please ensure your child is reading every night with an adult or older sibling. It is essential your child engages in reading for pleasure so there vocabulary and comprehension improves.
If you have any questions or problems, please speak to us before or after school. We are always here to help.
