Welcome back! I hope you have all enjoyed your Christmas break and are recharged and ready for a jam-packed Spring 1 term!

 

Please read this page to keep up to date with our focus for learning throughout the year. We are going to be asking, 'Where are we going and who are we going to meet?' throughout every unit of work. We will be travelling around the world and meeting many significant individuals. I am sure you will really enjoy the topics this year. I will share our learning further on our ClassDojo page.

MATHS

 

GRAPHS

The children will learn how to interpret picture graphs and bar graphs. They will be introduced to line graphs and learn how they are used to measure change over time

 

FRACTIONS

Pupils will be introduced to hundredths. They will learn about mixed number fractions and improper fractions.

The children will learn how to convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions, how to add and subtract fractions and will solve addition and subtraction word problems.

 

 

Quick recall of multiplication facts are vital for your children to gain confidence and fluency in both mental and written calculations. They should be practising for at least 10 minutes every day using the TTRS app, aiming to increase their accuracy and speed.

As you know, the Government have introduced a times table check at the end of Year 4. Please support your child to do as well as they can in this national test.

LITERACY

This half term, our focus text is 'Werewolf Club Rules’ by Joseph Coelho and Micheal Rosen’s A to Z the Best Children’s Poetry from Agard to Zephaniah.’ We will be exploring features of poetry and analysing many poems. We will also explore the feelings and emotions of the poems whilst also inferring why the poet has written the poem in this way. The children will be writing and performing their own poem.

 

We will continue to explore grammar within the English language and apply this knowledge in all our writing. We will be learning about alliteration, similes and metaphors, rhyme and rhyming structures, personification and onomatopoeia.

 

 

SPELLING

Every Friday, your child will be given their new spelling lists. Please take time to help your child learn these spellings each week. They will be tested on the following Friday. The children will be introduced to different methods to help them to learn the spelling rules. To help your child learn their spellings, please encourage them to recap the meaning of words and write them in sentences.

 

SCIENCE

 

This term will be exploring states of materials. We will be comparing and grouping materials together according whether they are solids, liquids and gases. Also, we will be observing, some materials can change state when heated and cooled. Identifying the part played by evaporation and condensation in the water cycle.

 

R.E.

 Our focus will be:

How do festivals and worship show what matters to a Muslim?

 

History

This term, we will be studying The Romans. We will be explaining why the Romans invaded Britain and the impact this had on Britain. Using a range of sources to gather evidence, meeting Queen Boudicca and the rebellion she led. Whilst comparing Roman Britain to Modern day Britain.

 

ART

This half term, we will be exploring the topic ‘Every Picture Tells a Story.’  We will be exploring the work of many artists and analysing the artwork.

 

PSHE/RSE

Our Life Education sessions this half term will focus on 'Safety’. During this unit, the children will be developing an understanding how to be safe online.

 

P.E.

 P.E lessons will continue on Tuesday mornings.  The children must come to school wearing their full PE kit every Tuesday. Earrings must be removed and they will need a water bottle.

This is the PE kit your child is required to wear:

Black shorts/tracksuit bottoms/leggings

Red t-shirt

Pumps or trainers

This term's focus is Dance.

 

 

MUSIC

 In Year 4, the children learn to play the violin with Mrs. Guillan. This is a great opportunity for them to experience playing an instrument and you can look forward to hearing them play.

 

Computing

This will be taught by Technola every Monday afternoon.

 

Reading books

We will continue to use Accelerated Reader. The children will complete a quiz on every book they read and then receive a new reading book. Please make sure your child reads with an adult every day after school. It is essential that your child engages in reading for pleasure as this helps to improve vocabulary and comprehension skills.

The children will recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 × 12, they will multiply two-digit and three-digit numbers by a one-digit number using formal written layout

LITERACY

This half term, our focus text is 'The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane' by Kate DiCamillo. This story follows the life of a toy rabbit and we will be analysing how he changes over time. The children will be exploring the feelings and emotions of the characters and lessons learned by the end of the book. They will be recounting 'a story within a story', writing a book review and writing an autobiography in role as Edward Tulane.

 

We will continue to explore grammar within the English language and apply this knowledge in all our writing. We will be learning about the present perfect tense, adverbial phrases, determiners, similes, metaphors and direct speech.

GEOGRAPHY

 

This half term in Geography, we will focus on Europe. We will be asking the question 'Why is Europe successful?' We will be learning about lines of longitude and latitude and understanding time zones. The children will also be identifying capital cities in Europe and debating the positives and negatives of tourism.

 

 

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY

This half term, we will be adapting a recipe to make biscuits. We will be testing ingredients, creating a budget and designing the packages for our biscuits. We will then be having a 'biscuit bake off'!

 

RSE

Our RSE sessions this half term will focus on 'Health and Wellbeing'. During this unit, the children will be developing emotional maturity; learning that we experience a range of emotions and are responsible for these; appreciating the emotions of others; developing a growth mindset; identifying calming and relaxing activities and developing independence in dental hygiene.

 

P.E.

Maths

This term we will be focusing place value. We will also be revising addition and subtraction and solving word problems. We will be learning written methods for multiplication and division. Also recalling multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 x 12.

 

Literacy

This term, we will be reading The Boy at the Back of the Class by Onjali Q Rauf. This is an interesting book about a refugee called Ahmet who come to live in London. We will be analysing the text, exploring new vocabulary, writing character and setting descriptions leading to the writing of our own story sequel.

 

In grammar and punctuation lessons, we will be focusing on Year 4 objectives which starts with pronouns.

 

Science

This term, we will be learning about Living Things and their Habitats. We will be able to recognise the characteristics of a living thing and how living things can be grouped in variety of ways. We will also be using classification keys to help group, identify and name a variety of living things in their wider environment.

 

Geography

This half term, we will be learning about Europe. We will be asking the question ‘Why is Europe successful?’

 

History

This term, we will be studying Ancient Greece. We will be explaining  the political system and democracy. The Ancient Olympic games, Greek Gods and Goddesses and recalling facts about the Battle of Marathon.

 

Art

The first art topic will be Texture and Pattern. We will be exploring charcoal, printing, reflection and symmetry.

 

R.E

This term, we will be learning about Hinduism. We will learn about Hindu gods, Hindu worship and Hindu symbolism.

 

PSHE/RSE

This term we will be learning about families and relationships. Which includes respect and manners, healthy friendships and thinking about how our behaviour affects others.

 

Design and Technology

TTRS

The children have logins for Time Tables Rock Stars. They can access the app at home on a laptop or iPad. Please encourage your child to access the website at home as this will give them much needed practice of the Times Tables they are unsure of. Children will be taking part in TTRS in class every day.

P.E
