Welcome to Year 4R

Welcome back! I hope you have all enjoyed your break and are ready for the Summer 2 term!

 

Please read this page to keep up to date with our focus for learning throughout the year. We are going to be asking, 'Where are we going and who are we going to meet?' throughout every unit of work. We will be travelling around the world and meeting many significant individuals. I am sure you will really enjoy the topics this year. I will share our learning further on our ClassDojo page.

MATHS

 

Mass, Volume and Length

The children will be learning how to estimate mass to the nearest kilogram whilst measuring mass accurately. They will learn to convert between different units of measure for mass. Learning about measuring volume and using decimals. The children will be learning to measure height using decimals. Also learning how to measure length in centimetres. Converting centimetres to metres and metres to kilometres. To measure the perimeter. Also solving word problems using measurement.

AREA

 

Children will be learning to measure the surface of an object. Also, finding the area of rectilinear shapes by counting squares. Using knowledge of area and perimeter to solve problems.

 

Geometry


 

The children will learn about the different types of angles. Identify and classify triangles and quadrilaterals. Also, identify symmetrical figures. Draw lines of symmetry, complete and make symmetrical figures. They will learn how to sort a variety of shapes.

 

Position and Movement

To describe the position of an object whilst also plotting the position and movement of an object.

 

Roman Numerals

To write roman numerals to 20 and 100.

 

TIMES TABLES

Quick recall of multiplication facts are vital for your children to gain confidence and fluency in both mental and written calculations. They should be practising for at least 10 minutes every day using the TTRS app, aiming to increase their accuracy and speed.

 

As you know, the Government have introduced a multiplication check at the end of Year 4. Please support your child to do as well as they can in this national test.

ENGLISH

This half term, our focus text is ‘Charlotte’s Web’ by E.B. White.

 

This half term, our focus text is ‘Charlotte’s Web’ by E.B. White. The children will be predicting and inferring about the book and character’s feelings. Whilst exploring and analysing the written language and the illustrations. They will be exploring persuasive texts and the features and structure of a persuasive piece. Also the children will write a narrative in role.

 

We will continue to explore grammar within the English language and apply this knowledge in all our writing. We will be learning about shades of meaning, using adjectives, expanded noun phrases, adverbial phrases, similes, metaphors, direct speech and conjunctions.

 

SPELLING

Every Monday, your child will be given their new spelling lists. Please take time to help your child learn these spellings each week. They will be tested on the following Friday. The children will be introduced to different methods to help them to learn the spelling rules. To help your child learn their spellings, please encourage them to recap the meaning of words and write them in sentences.

 

SCIENCE

 

This term will continue exploring electricity by recognising that a switch opens and closes a circuit and associate this with whether or not a lamp lights in a simple series circuit and recognising some common conductors and insulators, and associate metals with being good conductors.

 

This term will be exploring animals including humans. We will describe the simple functions of the basic parts of the human digestive system. Identifying the different types of teeth and their simple functions. Constructing and interpreting a variety of food chains whilst identifying the producers, predators and prey.

Our focus will be:

 How and why do people try to make the world a better place?

 

 

Geography

This term, we will be studying the human world, people and places. The children will be exploring megacities, million cities and will research the tallest building in the UK, Europe or the world. They will be learning about urban areas, explaining what an inner city is. Explain what a rural area is and discuss arable and pastoral farming. Locate Brazil on a map, name and locate the physical features of Brazil. Name and locate cities of Brazil and explaining what a favela is.

 

ART

This half term, we will be exploring the topic of sculpture. The children will be making musical instruments out of recycled materials. Whilst decorating them in a certain style. Also, the children will be making a collage in the style of the artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo and making sculptures out of carboard and bottle top lids in the style of an artist.

 

 

Life Education

Our Life Education sessions this half term will focus ‘Safety’ and ‘Transition.’ In safety, the children will learn about being safe online whilst learning there is an age restriction to protect. To explore the benefits and risks of sharing material online. Also, the children will learn about how to help someone with asthma. To understand the difference between secrets and surprises. Additionally, understanding that not all information online is valuable. In transition, the children will reflect in their time in Year 4 and set goals to achieve before Year 5.

 

 

P.E.

P.E lessons will continue on Monday afternoons.  The children must come to school wearing their full PE kit every Tuesday. Earrings must be removed and they will need a water bottle.

This term's focus is Invasion Games.

 

MUSIC

This half term the children will be exploring the song ‘Lean on Me’ by Bill Withers.

Computing

This will be taught by Mr. Adimora (Technola) every Tuesday morning.

 

Reading books

We will continue to use Accelerated Reader. The children will complete a quiz on every book they read and then receive a new reading book. Please make sure your child reads with an adult every day after school. It is essential that your child engages in reading for pleasure as this helps to improve vocabulary and comprehension skills.

MONEY

The children will be learning how to write amounts of money as decimals. Also, to compare amounts of money and rounding an amount of money to the nearest £1 and £10. We will  also be solving word problems involving money.

LITERACY

 

This half term, our focus text is ‘Pebble in my Pocket’ by Meredith Hooper.

 

The children will be exploring features of an information text and analysing the book. They will be discussing and analysing the written language and illustrations and will be exploring the history of the Earth and the different eras the pebble travelled through.  The children will be learning about the structural and grammatical features of an information piece.

 

We will continue to explore grammar within the English language and apply this knowledge in all our writing. We will be learning about main, subordinating and relative clauses, subordinating conjunctions, fronted adverbials, past and present prefect tense and expanded noun phrases.


 

 

 

 

SPELLING

Every Friday, your child will be given their new spelling lists which will link in with our grammar lessons. Please take time to help your child learn these spellings each week and they will be tested on the following Friday. The children will be introduced to different methods to help them to learn the spelling rules. To help your child learn their spellings, please encourage them to recap the meaning of words and write them in sentences.

 

SCIENCE

 

This term we will be exploring electricity identifying common appliances that use it. The children will be constructing simple

series electrical circuits, identifying and naming the basic components, including cells, wires, bulbs, switches and buzzers. They will be explaining what happens if there is a break in a circuit and how a switch opens and closes a circuit. The children will investigate materials that are good conductors and insulators of electricity and then use this knowledge to create their own switches.

We will of course be discussing the dangers of electricity and how to keep themselves safe.

 

R.E.

Our focus will be:

 What kind of world did Jesus want?

 

The children will explore stories from the Gospel – meaning ‘Good News’. They will think about what Jesus taught about love and respecting our fellow man. What would that look like? Hw could we show this?

 

History

This term, we will be studying the Georgians. We will be ordering dates, key events and features on a timeline. We will meet King George I, II, III and IV, research what life was like in the Georgian era and explain their impact on modern day Britain.

 

 

ART

This half term, we will be exploring ‘Every Picture Tells A Story.’ The children will be exploring artists’ work and explaining how the paintings tell a narrative. They ill be discussing how these paintings use formal elements to shoe feelings, tell stories and prompt a reaction. 

 

 

Life Education

Our Life Education sessions this half term will focus on ‘Economic Wellbeing.’ The children will be developing an understanding of how to keep track of money, how this can be lost and the effect this can have on people. We will be considering the spending of money and how over time adults can change their careers. 

 

P.E.

P.E lessons will continue on Monday afternoons.  The children must come to school wearing their full PE kit. Earrings must be removed and they will need a water bottle.

This is the PE kit your child is required to wear:

The children will be telling the time on a 24-hour clock. Also changing minutes to seconds as well as changing hours to minutes. Learning to solve problems in duration of time and change years to months and weeks to days. Then solving word problems involving time.

 

DECIMALS

The children will be learning how to write in tenths, hundredths. To wrote decimals to one and two decimal places. Comparing and ordering decimals and rounding decimals to the nearest whole number. Whilst writing fractions as decimals and dividing whole numbers by 10 and 100.

This half term, our focus text is ‘Varjak Paw’ by S.F. Said. The children will be exploring features of a newspaper report and analysing the book. The children will be exploring and analysing the thoughts and feelings of the characters. Also, the children will explore the structural and grammatical features of a newspaper report.

 

We will continue to explore grammar within the English language and apply this knowledge in all our writing. We will be learning about inverted commas, writing in third person, past and present perfect tense, adverbials and conjunctions and how to apply this into a newspaper report.

This term will be exploring sound. Identifying how sounds are made and associating them with something vibrating. Recognising that vibrations from sound travel through a medium to the ear. Also finding patterns between the pitch and the volume of a sound and the features of an object that made the sound. Recognising that sounds get fainter as the distance from the sound source increases.

 Our focus will be:

What is the ‘Trinity’ and why is it important for Christians?

 

Geography

This term, we will be studying the Natural World. Understanding and explain the stages of the water cycle. Also, consider the structure of the earth and how this relates to volcanoes. How volcanoes are formed, the different types of volcanoes and explain how volcanoes are a natural hazard. Explaining what an earthquake is and why this can be a natural hazard.

 

Design & Technology

This half term, we will be exploring pavilion structures by considering what they are used for and investigating how to construct a strong and stable structure. Then the children will design and create their own pavilions with cladding.

 

 

Life Education

Our Life Education sessions this half term will focus on 'Citizenship’ and ‘Economic Wellbeing.’ In Citizenship, the children will be developing an understanding of human rights, diversity and caring for the environment. In Economic Wellbeing, the children will be developing an understanding of how to keep track of money, how this can be lost and the effect this can have on people. Also, considering the spending of money and how over time adults can change their careers. 

 

P.E.

 P.E lessons will continue on Monday afternoons.  The children must come to school wearing their full PE kit every Monday. Earrings must be removed and they will need a water bottle.

Pupils will be introduced to hundredths. They will learn about mixed number fractions and improper fractions. Understanding equivalent fractions is very important so please support your children with this.

The children will learn how to convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions, how to add and subtract fractions and will solve addition and subtraction word problems.

This half term, our focus text is 'Werewolf Club Rules’ by Joseph Coelho and Michael Rosen’s A to Z the Best Children’s Poetry from Agard to Zephaniah.’ The children will be exploring features of poetry and analysing many poems. The children will also explore the feelings and emotions of the poems whilst also inferring why the poet has written the poem in this way. They will be writing and performing their own poem.

 

 We will continue to explore grammar within the English language and apply this knowledge in all our writing. We will be learning about alliteration, similes and metaphors, rhyme and rhyming structures, personification and onomatopoeia.

This term we will be exploring ‘States of Matter’. We will be comparing and grouping materials together according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases. Also, we will be observing how some materials can change state when heated or cooled and identifying the part played by evaporation and condensation in the water cycle.

What is it like for someone to follow God?

History:

 

This term, we will be studying The Romans. We will be explaining why the Romans invaded Britain and the impact this had on Britain. We will be using a range of sources to gather evidence, meeting Queen Boudicca and learning about the rebellion she led. We will also be comparing Roman and modern-day Britain.

 

ART:

   

 

 

This half term, we will be exploring formal elements of art. By using 2D shapes to print a repeated pattern, to show symmetry. To explore mark making using charcoal, show reflection and symmetry.

 

Life Education

This half term, our focus text is 'The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane' by Kate DiCamillo. This story follows the life of a toy rabbit and we will be analysing how he changes over time. The children will be exploring the feelings and emotions of the characters and lessons learned by the end of the book. They will be recounting 'a story within a story', writing a book review and writing an autobiography in role as Edward Tulane.

 

 

 

We will continue to explore grammar within the English language and apply this knowledge in all our writing. We will be learning about the present perfect tense, adverbial phrases, determiners, similes, metaphors and direct speech.

 

In Science, we will continue to explore Living Things and their Habitats. We will be able to recognise that living things can be grouped in a variety of ways and we will be using classification keys to help group, identify and name a variety of living things in their wider environment.

 

In RE, we will continue to explore Hinduism. Our focus will be:

What does it mean to be Hindu in Britain today?

(Dharma)

 

 

 

This half term in Geography, we will focus on Europe. We will be asking the question 'Why is Europe successful?' We will be learning about lines of longitude and latitude and understanding time zones. The children will also be identifying capital cities in Europe and debating the positives and negatives of tourism.

 

 

 

This half term in Design Technology, we will be adapting a recipe to make biscuits. We will be testing ingredients, creating a budget and designing the packages for our biscuits. We will then be having a 'biscuit bake off'!

 

Our RSE sessions this half term will focus on 'Health and Wellbeing'. During this unit, the children will be developing emotional maturity; learning that we experience a range of emotions and are responsible for these; appreciating the emotions of others; developing a growth mindset; identifying calming and relaxing activities and developing independence in dental hygiene

 

 

P.E lessons will continue on Monday mornings.  The children must come to school wearing their full PE kit every Monday. Earrings must be removed and they will need a water bottle.

Maths

This term, we will be focusing on place value. We will also be revising addition and subtraction and solving word problems. We will be learning written methods for multiplication and division and recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 × 12

 

 

Literacy

This term, we will be reading The Boy at the Back of the Class by Onjali Q Rauf. This is a fascinating book about a refugee called Ahmet who comes to live in London. We will be analysing the text, exploring new vocabulary, writing character and setting descriptions which will lead up to us writing our own story sequel.

 

  

 

In grammar and punctuation lessons, we will be focusing on the Year 4 objectives starting with using pronouns. 

 

 

 

 

Science

In Autumn 1, we are going to be learning about Living Things and their Habitats. We will be able to recognise that living things can be grouped in a variety of ways and we will be using classification keys to help group, identify and name a variety of living things in their wider environment.

 

 

 

History

History will focus on a study of Ancient Greece. We will be finding out about Greek gods and goddesses, recalling facts about the battle of Marathon and explaining about the Ancient Greeks' political system.

 

 

 

Art

Our first Art topic will be Texture and Pattern. We will be exploring charcoal, printing, reflection and symmetry.

 

 

 

RE

In Autumn 1, our RE lessons are going to be focusing on Hinduism. We will be learning about Hindu gods, Hindu worship and Hindu symbolism.

 

 

PHSE/RSE

We will be learning about families and relationships. This includes respect and manners, healthy friendships and thinking about how our behaviour affects others.

 

 

 

Design and Technology

This half term we will be adapting a recipe to make biscuits. We will be testing ingredients, creating a budget and designing the packages for our biscuits. We will then be having a 'biscuit bake off'!

 

 

TTRS

The children have logins for Times Tables Rock Stars. They can access the app at home on a laptop or tablet. Please encourage your child to access the website at home as this will give them much needed practice of the Times Tables they are unsure of. Children will be taking part in TTRS in class every day.

P.E

This year, our P.E lessons will take place on Monday mornings.  The children must come to school wearing their full PE kit every Monday. Earrings must be removed and they will need a water bottle and outdoor coat..

This is the PE kit your child is required to wear:

Black shorts/tracksuit bottoms/leggings

Red t-shirt

Pumps or trainers

This term's focus is Basketball.

 

 

 

Spelling

Every Friday, your child will be given their new spelling lists. Please take time to help your child learn these spellings each week. They will be tested on the following Friday. The children will be introduced to different methods to help them to learn the spelling rules. To help your child learn their spellings, please encourage them to recap the meaning of words and write them in sentences. 

 

 

Music

In Year 4 the children learn to play the violin with Mrs. Guillan. This is a great opportunity for them to experience playing an instrument and you can look forward to hearing them play.

 

 

Computing

This will be taught by Technola every Monday morning. Look on Dojo for further information and photographs of our activities.

 

 

 

Reading books

We will continue to use Accelerated Reader. The children will complete a quiz on every book they read and then receive a new reading book. Please make sure your child reads with an adult every day after school. It is essential that your child engages in reading for pleasure as this helps to improve vocabulary and comprehension skills.
