Welcome to Year 6T
Welcome back to our first term of the school year. This term is going to be very busy and we have lots of fun activities planned for you all to enjoy and to help you settle into your new year group.
We will be posting lots of photographs and documents to aid learning on the school website and on Dojo to keep you updated of all of the fun things we get up to.

The first topic the children in year 6 will be working on is Numbers to 10 Million. During this topic the children will be reading and writing numbers to 10 million, comparing and ordering numbers to 10 million and rounding numbers.
During our next topic we will be working on Four Operations on Whole Numbers. During this topic the children will be using mixed operations, multiplying dividing by 2-digit numbers, finding common factors and multiples, finding prime numbers and solving work problems.
In Literacy the children will be reading the text Pax by Sara Pennypacker. Whilst reading this book, the children will be responding to and learning new language and vocabulary and taking part in discussions and debates. The children will also be writing a letter in role, writing a dual narrative story and taking part in a balanced argument.
The children will be mainly covering the grammar objectives for their year group but will cover some objectives across previous years to recap and reinforce their learning.
The children will take part in 5 guided reading sessions every week which will focus on reading comprehension by using a range of questioning techniques to develop their skills. The children will also be reading independently or with a member of staff daily to develop their fluency.
In Science the children will be learning all about Animals Including Humans. During this topic the children will be learning how to identify and name the parts of the human circulatory system and describe the functions of the heart, blood vessels and blood. The children will also be finding out ways in which nutrients and water are transported within animals and humans.
They will also be learning how the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle can affect the bodies function.
In History the children will be learning all about Maya Civilisations. During this topic the children will be learning about where the Maya people lived, who the main Maya Gods were, what they represented and their rituals. They will also be encouraged to describe the different features of Maya cities and be able to appreciate what it would have been like to live there, answering questions to demonstrate their understanding of different aspects of the Maya civilisation.
In Geography the children will be learning all about location and place knowledge by looking at maps of the world and different continents in relation to their location. They will also be encouraged to look at and identify which country they were born in and what languages they speak. The children will also be taking part in a study all about Oceania and Asia
In DT the children will be taking part in a topic called Come Dine with Me. During this topic the children will be designing and making a starter, main course and dessert using given ingredients to work with. The children will also be researching where food comes from and how to travels from ‘farm to fork’. They will also be looking at staying safe in a kitchen focussing on hygiene.
In Art the children will be working on Art and Design skills. During this topic the children will be working on developing their sketch books, making sketches based on The Japanese Footbridge by Claude Monet, painting using water colours, making Zentangle prints and making and designing a hat.
In RE the children will be looking at people’s perspectives and impressions of Jesus. During this topic the children will be looking at who Jesus was, the life he lived and his teachings and miracles. During this time the children will also be encouraged to develop their own perspectives of Jesus.
This half term we will be learning all about respect, what it means to us and how to develop respectful relationships. We will also be discussing stereotypes, attitudes and how to resolve conflicts. Our final lesson in this topic will be looking at change and loss and how to process emotions relating to grief.
The children will be given logins for Times Tables Rock Stars. They can access the app at home on a laptop or ipad. Please encourage your child to access the website at home as this will give them much needed practice of the Times Tables they are unsure of.

Our P.E topic for this term is invasion games. The children can come into school wearing their PE kit on the day they do PE, which for our class, is on Monday. The children are required to wear-
Black shorts/tracksuit bottoms/leggings
Pumps or trainers
Children will be given a spelling list every Friday, please ensure your child practices these as they will be tested on these spellings the following Friday. To support them further, encourage your child to form sentences with the words given.
Children will be given homework weekly to support the teaching that we have been doing in school. This homework will mainly focus on developing Maths and Literacy skills. The children can complete this work independently or with the support of parents. It is also extremely important that, as part of their homework, your child reads every day. Please see the information under the Books heading below.
Reading books will be changed every Friday. Please ensure that books are in school by Thursday. Library books will be changed every week. It is important that your child reads every evening. This could be done independently or with the help of an adult or older sibling.
