Welcome to Year 6T

Happy New Year and welcome back to the spring term.  This term is going to be very busy and we have lots of fun activities planned for you all to enjoy over the next 5 weeks.

We will be continuing with our questions ‘Where are we going and who are we going to meet?' throughout every unit of work. We will be travelling around the world and meeting many significant individuals and looking at many different places around the world.

All of our Spring 1 learning is listed below. We will be posting lots of photographs and documents to aid learning on the school website and on Dojo to keep you updated of all of the fun things we get up to. If you have any questions do not hesitate to speak to us before or after school or send a message on Class Dojo during school hours.

Maths

This half term the children in year 6 will be starting the second Maths No Problem book.  The first topic we will be completing is percentages.  During this topic the children will be finding the percentages of numbers and quantities and using percentages to compare.  Our topic after that will be ratio.  The children will also be working on developing their arithmetic skills.

Literacy

In English the children will be reading the book Holes by Louis Sachar.

During this topic the children will be looking at descriptive language, writing a diary entry and a letter in role.  They will also be completing some guided reading sessions using questions from the text.

The children will be mainly covering the grammar objectives for their year group but will cover some objectives across previous years to recap and reinforce their learning.

The children will take part in 4 guided reading sessions every week which will focus on reading comprehension by using a range of questioning techniques to develop their skills.  The children will also be reading independently or with a member of staff daily to develop their fluency.

Science

In Science the children will be learning all about electricity.  During this topic the children will be looking at how the voltage and number of cells in a circuit affects the volume of a buzzer and the brightness of a bulb.  The children will also be looking at reasons why there are variations in how components function, including the brightness of bulbs, the loudness of buzzers and the on/off position of switches.  The children will also be making their own circuits and when drawing diagrams, use the recognised symbols to represent the components.

History

In History our topic is The Elizabethans.  During this topic the children will be learning about the key characters during this period of time. They will also be learning all about Sir Francis Drake and completing a character study.  They will also be learning about and experiencing some of the feasts and banquets that took place during this time.

Art

In Art the children will be working on Photography.  During this topic the children will be using magazines and photographs to create a photomontage.  They will also be creating their own ‘truism’ which communicates meaning and shows impact and taking macro photographs in the style of Edward Weston.

It is also extremely important that, as part of their homework, your child reads every day.  Please see the information under the Books heading below.

Reading books will be changed every Friday. Please ensure that books are in school by Thursday. Library books will be changed every week. It is important that your child reads every evening. This could be done independently or with the help of an adult or older sibling.
