Welcome to Year 5
Welcome to our Year 5 page. We hope you have had a refreshing Easter Break and are excited for a busy but exciting Summer term.
In our History topic, we will be learning all about the Shang Dynasty. We will be focusing on when and where the hang Dynasty existed; what life was like there based on archaeological evidence; describing the social hierarchy and religious beliefs; explaining the discovery, purpose and significance of oracle bones; as well as examining a range of artefacts.
In Geography, we will be looking at finishing off our learning on the continent of North America. We will look at its position on the Earth in relation to time zones and climate; We will identify key environmental regions of North and South America and look at key physical and human characteristics of major cities. We will finish the unit off by looking at how a location fits into its wider geographic location and plan a holiday taking account of distance and time.
In Science, we will be learning all about Space. We will describe the movement of the Earth and other planets relative to the sun in the solar system; describe the movement of the moon relative to the Earth; describe the sun, Earth and moon as approximately spherical bodies; and use the idea of the Earth's rotation to explain day and night and the apparent movement of the sun across the sky.
In Literacy, our learning will be linked to our Science Topic. We will be reading the novel 'Cosmic' by Frank Cottrell Boyce and partaking in a range of drama activities. We will be exploring the characters; settings; issues and dilemmas; and emotions. We will also watch the video 'Pandora' which we will be writing a Non-Chronological report on for our writing assessment.
In Maths, we will be learning all about percentages to draw a close to our fraction unit. We will write percentages as fractions (and vice versa); and solve problems involving decimal and percentage equivalents. We will also start our geometry unit and we will be developing our knowledge of angles from previous years. We will identify names and qualities of angles; draw, measure and add angles; identify angles on a line, around a point and in a shape; and investigate regular polygons. We will be using the Maths No Problem workbooks as well as other resources and plenty of manipulatives to support us in our understanding. We also use the White Rose Hub schemes to challenge our thinking further.
Please visit this page regularly as it will be updated with photos of our work and links to aid learning. Take a look at our planning documents to find out more about what we will be learning this year.
Children will require their P.E. kits every Thursday and Friday. They should leave it in school until the half term holiday. This will ensure that they don’t regularly forget their P.E. kit. The children will need either pumps or trainers as the children will participate in outdoor and indoor activities throughout the term. If your child doesn’t have the correct footwear, they may not be able to participate in certain activities, which would have a negative impact on their physical development.
Children will be given a spelling list every Wednesday, please ensure your child practices these as they will be tested on these spellings the following week, usually within sentences. To support them further, encourage children to use a dictionary to find their meanings as well as form sentences with the words given.
Children will be given learning log challenges each term which is linked to the work they have been covering throughout the topic. Please look at our homework grid below. It states how many tasks need to be completed. Remember to encourage children to be creative and share their learning in different ways.
Reading books will be changed every Thursday. Please ensure that books and signed reading diaries are in school each Thursday. Library books will be changed every two weeks. It is important that your child reads every evening. This could be done independently or with the help of an adult or older sibling.
The children have been given logins for Times Tables Rock Stars. They can access the app at home on a laptop or iPad and even get the opportunity to play against the teachers some evenings. Please encourage your child to access the website at home as this will give them much needed practice of the Times Tables they are unsure of.
