Welcome to Year 4CT
Happy New Year!
Welcome to our Year 4 page. We have lots of exciting things planned for the first half of the Spring Term.
The children have settled really well into year 4 and have enjoyed the first term.
During this half term we will be answering the question ‘How would you survive without water?’ as part of our Science unit.
We will be learning about materials and grouping them into solids, liquids and gasses. We will also be looking at changes to materials and what happens when we change the temperature of them.
The children will also be learning about the water cycle and learning a song to help them remember the process.
In History the children will be answering the question ‘Why were the Romans so powerful and what did we learn from them?’ During this unit the children will be learning all about centuries and decades and plotting dates on timelines. They will also be looking at different historic items and building a picture of the life of a Roman soldier. As well as different inventions and the way they have helped us today.
The children will also be completing a study using search engines and computers on Boudicca and researching how different people viewed her. In Art and DT we will be designing our own mosaic and shield.
In Literacy the children will be reading the book Ice Palace and writing their own quest story using talk for writing. We will also be focusing on different grammar objectives such as speech, fronted adverbials and expanded noun phrases. The children will also be using dictionaries to find the meaning of words and check their spellings and using a thesaurus to find synonyms for words to make their writing more interesting.
They will also be completing a unit of work on poetry and reading a range of different genres in guided reading.
In Maths the children will be completing the unit- Multiplication and Division. This focusses on multiplying and dividing two and three digit numbers using the formal written layout. The children will also be learning the meaning of commutativity and completing word problems involving multiplication and division. It is important that the children learn the multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 x 12. We will be completing Times Tables Rock Stars and early morning work to support the children with this. The children should also practise this at home by competing any given homework and accessing Times Tables Rock Stars at home.
The children have been given logins for Times Tables Rock Stars. They can access the app at home on a laptop or ipad and even get the opportunity to play against the teachers some evenings. Please encourage your child to access the website at home as this will give them much needed practice of the Times Tables they are unsure of.

In R.E the children will be learning about the religion of Hinduism and the meanings of signs and symbols. On Monday 22nd January we will also be going on a very social visit to The Mandir Hindu Temple in Bolton.
Please visit this page regularly as it will be updated with photos of our work and links to aid learning. Take a look at our planning documents to find out more about what we will be learning this year.
Children will require their P.E. kits every Thursday and Friday. They should leave it in school until the half term holiday. This will ensure that they don’t regularly forget their P.E. kit. The children will need either pumps or trainers as the children will participate in outdoor and indoor activities throughout the term. If your child doesn’t have the correct footwear, they may not be able to participate in certain activities, which would have a negative impact on their physical development.
Children will be given a spelling list every Friday, please ensure your child practices these as they will be tested on these spellings the following Thursday. To support them further, encourage children to form sentences with the words given.
Children will be given learning log challenges each term which is linked to the work they have been covering throughout the topic. This needs to be handed in on specific dates, please take this opportunity to work with your child and tackle the challenges with a creative, imaginative mind that celebrates you child's ideas. Please take a look at our homework grid below.
Reading books will be changed every Friday. Please ensure that books and signed reading diaries are in school each Monday. Library books will be changed every two weeks. It is important that your child reads every evening. This could be done independently or with the help of an adult or older sibling.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to speak to us at the end of the school day.
