Welcome to Year 5B
Summer 1
We are going to be asking, 'Where are we going and who will we meet?' throughout every unit of work. We will be travelling around the world and meeting many significant individuals. I am sure you will really enjoy the topics.

Maths
We are using Maths No Problem resources focusing on Geometry, looking at angles and shapes, as well as Position & Movement, learning about translation and reflection.
We will also continue working on arithmetic during morning work.
Literacy
5B are reading and analysing Street Child by Berlie Doherty. We will be writing a recount as a diary entry in role as the main character, as well as other incidental pieces of writing along the way, such as a newspaper report.
Science
This half term, we are learning about Materials. We will investigate the properties of materials, identify reversible and irreversible changes, observe dissolving, filtering, separating and evaporating.
History
In History, we are learning about the Industrial Revolution. We will be learning about Victorian Britain during this time, how industry, technology and transport changed, and the positive and negative impacts of the Industrial Revolution. We will also meet John Kay, inventor of the Flying Shuttle, which helped to boost cotton manufacturing in Bury!
RE
Our question this half term is "Why is the Torah so important to Jewish people?"
Life Education
Our topic this half term is Safety and the changing body, where we will be learning about online safety, parts of the body, the changes our bodies go through during puberty, and first aid.
Art
Our topic this half term is Sculpture: interactive installation. We will be comparing features of art installations, investigating the effect of space and scale, constructing 3D artwork, and communicating our ideas in our finished piece.
TT Rock Stars
The children all have a home login for Times Tables Rock Stars. Please encourage your child to access the website at home as this will give them much needed practice of the times tables they are unsure of. Children will be taking part in TTRS in class every day.

PE
This year, our PE lessons will take place on Friday mornings. 5B must come to school wearing their full PE kit every Friday. Earrings must be removed and a water bottle and outdoor coat will be required.
This term's focus is Striking & Fielding.

5B will continue to use Accelerated Reader. They will complete a quiz on every book they read and then receive a new reading book. Please make sure your child reads with an adult every day after school. It is essential that your child engages in reading for pleasure, as this helps to improve vocabulary and comprehension skills. Please support your child to join in with our 'read around the world' reading incentive by encouraging them to read for pleasure for at least 10 minutes every evening.

Literacy
5B are reading and analysing Shackleton's Journey by William Grill. We will be writing an inspiring speech, as well as other incidental pieces of writing along the way, such as a job advert and a postcard home to a loved one!
Science
We will be continuing our focus on Electricity, finding out about non-renewable and renewable sources of energy. We will create an advert on the iPads to demonstrate our knowledge whilst also informing people about the benefits to our climate of renewable energy sources.
Geography
In Geography, we are learning about biomes. We will be locating biomes on a map and a globe, researching Antarctica as a desert/ tundra, as well as exploring the physical features of these areas of our planet. We will also discover what changes to our climate are being made by human processes.
RE
Our question this half term is "For Christians, what kind of King was Jesus?"
Life Education
Our topic this half term is Economic wellbeing, where we will be learning about attitudes to money, keeping money safe, stereotypes in the workplace, gambling and careers.
D&T
Our topic this half term is Mechanical systems: pop-up books. We are going to design and make our own pop-up books, using mechanisms such as sliders and pivots. We will design and illustrate our book to link with our class novel, Shackleton's Journey.

This term's focus is Dance. The children learn different styles of dance and focus on dancing with other people. They create, perform and watch dances in a range of styles working within a small group and whole dance troupe. In dance as a whole, children think about how to use movement to explore and communicate ideas and issues, and their own feelings and thoughts. As they work, they develop an awareness of the historical and cultural origins of an Arabic dance.

Music
This half term we will be focusing on hip-hop music, using The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as the stimulus for our topic. We will listen and appraise different examples of music from the hip-hop genre, and compose and perform musical notation. We will also be learning a song for the Easter Production.
Computing

Maths
We are using Maths No Problem resources focusing on Division, Graphs, Fractions, Percentages and Decimals.
We will also continue our daily Arithmetic/ TT Rock Stars morning work alongside this.
Literacy
5B are reading and analysing Anglo-Saxon Boy by Tony Bradman. We will be writing a battle scene and a balanced argument, as well as many other incidental pieces of writing along the way!
Science
In Science the children will be learning all about electricity. During this topic, the children will be looking at how the voltage and number of cells in a circuit affects the volume of a buzzer and the brightness of a bulb. The children will also be looking at the reason why there are variations in how components function, including the brightness of bulbs, the loudness of buzzers and the on/off position of switches. The children will also be making their own circuits and when drawing diagrams, using the recognised symbols to represent the components.
History
In History, we are learning about the Anglo-Saxons. We will compare Anglo-Saxon life with modern living, learn about famous battles during this period of time, where the Angles, Saxons and Jutes came from, and much more. Our Golden Threads in History this half term will be Society, Beliefs and Conflict/ Invasion.
RE
Our question this half term is "How do Christians decide how to live? What would Jesus do?"
Life Education
Our topic this half term is Citizenship, where we will be learning about the role of pressure groups, diversity in society, environmental issues, the importance of caring for others, freedom of expression and how parliament works.
Art
Our topic this half term is Drawing: I need space. We will be learning about retrofuturism, evaluating images, selecting textures for a collagraph plate, and creating drawings and notes to generate ideas for a final composition.

This is a six-week unit of work. All the learning is focused around one song: Make You Feel My Love. The material presents an integrated approach to music where games, elements of music (pulse, rhythm, pitch etc), singing and playing instruments are all linked. As well as learning to sing, play, improvise and compose with this song, children will listen and appraise other Pop Ballads.
Computing

5B are reading and analysing There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom by Louis Sachar. We will be writing our own chapters of the book as a narrative, as well as using the text during some Guided Reading sessions.
Science
This half term, we are learning about the circulatory system, including how the heart and lungs work, the job of the arteries and veins, and the impact of drugs, exercise and diet and the transportation of nutrients.
Geography
In Geography, we are learning about The Americas. We will be locating the continents and countries within them, identifying human and physical features, learning about the climate zones and biomes of these continents, as well as using map work effectively.
RE
Our question this half term is "What does it mean if Christians believe God is holy and loving?"
Life Education
We are learning about health and wellbeing, which includes: relaxation, the importance of rest, embracing failure, going for goals, feelings and healthy eating.
DT
Our topic this half term is Food: What could be healthier? We will be learning about where our food produce comes from, before designing our own healthy recipe and cooking up a delicious meal!
French
We will be learning the names of different family members, such as brother and sister, using our knowledge from last half term to describe them. Following this, 5B will learn to say and write what likes and dislikes their family have, before finishing the half term by creating a short presentation about their family to present to the class, in French, of course!

This half term, we are learning about Living Things and their Habitats. We will be describing life cycles of mammals, amphibians, insects and birds. As well as this, we will describing the life processes of reproduction in some plants and animals.
History
In History, we are learning about Ancient Islamic Civilisations. We are discovering the importance of Baghdad, how Ancient Islamic Scholars were inventors and teachers, and about Arabesque artwork.
RE
Our question this half term is "What is it like to be a Muslim in Britain today?"
Life Education
We are learning about relationships, exploring concepts such as friendships, respect, resolving conflict, family life, stereotyping and change & loss.
Art
Our topic this half term is Painting and Mixed Media. We are creating poetry portraits, self-portraits, changing faces and mixed-media portraits.
French
This half term, we will be revising masculine and feminine nouns, before using adjectives to describe our bodies and personalities. We will finish by writing descriptive sentences about our friends.
