Welcome to Year 4/5T
Welcome back, we hope you have had a lovely Summer holidays and are now ready for the first half of our Autumn term.

In Maths the year 4 children will be learning all about numbers to 10000. This will involve ordering numbers, making number patterns, rounding numbers and estimating.
Our second topic will be addition and subtraction within 10000. This will involve adding and subtracting with and without renaming. Finding the differences and solving word problems.
Our third topic will be multiplication and division. This will involve multiplying and dividing by 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12 and solving word problems involving, multiplication and division.
The children in year 5 will be learning all about numbers to 1000000. This will involve ordering numbers, making number patterns and rounding numbers.
Our second topic will be addition and subtraction within 1000000. This will involve counting on to add and counting backwards to subtract.
Our third topic will be multiplication and division. This will involve finding multiples, factors, common factors, finding prime numbers and finding square and cube numbers. We will also be learning how to multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000. The children will be multiplying 4 digit numbers and multiplying a 2 digit number by a 2 digit number.
In Literacy the children will be reading a story called Varmints. They will be learning about the environment and ways in which we can protect it. We will be writing our own story openings and using thesauruses to find synonyms for words to make our writing more descriptive. We will also be looking at the features of a letter and writing letter to the Varmints to tell them how we would like them to change.
The children will be mainly covering the grammar objectives for their year group but will cover some objectives across years 4 and 5 to recap and extend their learning.
In Science the children will be answering the question Could you be the next CSI investigator' During this unit the children will be learning all about the properties of materials. Using their knowledge of solids, liquid and gasses to decide how mixtures can be separated through filtering, sieving and evaporating. They will be recapping reversible and irreversible changes and also showing us the uses of everyday materials such as metal, wood and plastic.
In Geography the children will be answering the question Why should the rainforests be important to all of us? During this topic the children will be learning abut time zones to calculate differences around the world, locating North and South America and the environmental regions. They will also be learning how to describe key sects of climate zones and identify key physical and human characteristics of major cities.
The children will be given logins for Times Tables Rock Stars. They can access the app at home on a laptop or ipad and even get the opportunity to play against the teachers some evenings. Please encourage your child to access the website at home as this will give them much needed practice of the Times Tables they are unsure of.

Children will require their P.E. kits every Tuesday and Friday. They should leave it in school until the half term holiday. This will ensure that they don’t regularly forget their P.E. kit. The children will need either pumps or trainers as the children will participate in outdoor and indoor activities throughout the term. If your child doesn’t have the correct footwear, they may not be able to participate in certain activities, which would have a negative impact on their physical development.
Children will be given a spelling list every Friday, please ensure your child practices these as they will be tested on these spellings the following Thursday. To support them further, encourage children to form sentences with the words given.
Children will be given learning log challenges each term which is linked to the work they have been covering throughout the topic. This needs to be handed in on specific dates, please take this opportunity to work with your child and tackle the challenges with a creative, imaginative mind that celebrates you child's ideas. Please take a look at our homework grid below.
Reading books will be changed every Wednesday. Please ensure that books and signed reading diaries are in school by Wednesday. Library books will be changed every week. It is important that your child reads every evening. This could be done independently or with the help of an adult or older sibling.
