3L
Welcome to Year 3L
Welcome to our Year 3 page. We have finally made it to the final half-term. This year has flown by but we have lots of exciting topics to learn about in the weeks to come.
In our Geography topic, we will be learning all about ‘The Human World’ and ‘People and Places’. We will learn about different types of settlements and where they are found, and how these settlements impact on occupations in specific areas. We will look at a range of settlements local to our area, and see how and why they have changed over time. For our case studies, we will be focusing on Spain and the Lake District, comparing and contrasting the physical and human features within settlements.
In Science, across the whole of the Summer term, we will be learning all about ‘Plants’. We will be learning about the functions of the different parts of a flowering plant, we will investigate what plants need for life and growth, we will investigate how water is transported in plants, and look at the life cycle, including pollination, seed formation and dispersal. We will also be researching the key scientist ‘Nehemiah Grew’.
In Literacy, we are using ‘I Was a Rat! or The Scarlet Slippers’ by Philip Pullman as our core text. We will read, discuss, debate and analyse the characters, setting and plot before writing in and exploring various roles through drama style activities. We will then write a newspaper report for ‘The Daily Scourge’ by the end of the half-term.
In Numeracy, we will be learning all about angles. We will learn the names of 3 different types (acute, right, and obtuse), how they are a property of shape, and how right angles relate to half, quarter, three-quarter and whole turns. We will then delve deeper into shapes and explore how to draw and make a wide range of 2-D and 3-D shapes and describe them. We will look at the different types of lines: horizontal, vertical, diagonal, perpendicular and parallel. Finally, we will finish off our measurement topic by learning all about perimeter. We will find the perimeter or basic quadrilaterals and simple 2-D shapes.
In DT, we will be learning about ‘Textiles’ and designing and making our own cushions using felt and other materials. We will learn two new sewing techniques (cross-stitch and appliqué) before designing, making and assembling the cushion.
Please visit this page regularly as it will be updated with photos of our work and links to aid learning. Take a look at our planning documents to find out more about what we will be learning this year.
P.E.
Children will not require their PE kits for the Autumn term due to the change of uniform policy. Our PE session will be on a Monday morning so please send your children in the appropriate clothing and footwear. PE will predominantly happen outside.
Spellings
Children will be given a spelling list every Friday. Please ensure your child practises these everyday as there will be a test on a Friday. To support them further, encourage children to use a dictionary to find their meaning as well as form sentences with the words given.
Learning Logs
Children will be given learning log challenges each half-term which is linked to the work they will be covering in their topics. Please look at our homework grid below. It states how many tasks need to be completed. Remember to encourage children to be creative and share their learning in different ways. Work can be completed and uploaded onto Seesaw/Dojo when finished to reduce the number of things being brought into school and can be electronically marked.
Books
Reading books will be changed every Wednesday. Please ensure that books and signed reading diaries are in school for Wednesday. Reading book, upon return, will be quarantined for 72 hours before they will be recirculated. It is important that your child reads every day. This can be done independently or with the help of an adult or older sibling. Please also ask the children questions about their book to check their understanding.
Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS)
The children will have been given their logins for Times Tables Rock Stars. They can access the application at home on a laptop or iPad/tablet and even get the opportunity to play against each other or myself some evenings. Please encourage your child to access TTRS at home as this will give them much needed practice of the multiplication facts they are unsure of. Children in Y3 need to know their 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 8x and 10x of by heart. Once secure, they can learn the rest ready for the statutory test at the end of Y4.
