Good morning Year 1,
Thank you for all your lovely work yesterday.
Here are today’s tasks.

To start today's phonics please can you recap your phase 3 and phase 5 sounds that you find tricky. You can use your sound mats or you could use the flash cars on phonics play.
Can you now practice some of your tricky words- You need to be able to read and spell these! Practise the ones that you find difficult. Choose up to 5.

This half term we are going to be looking at alternative pronunciations and alternative spellings. Today we are going to look at the alternative pronunciation for the ‘y’ grapheme. Can you read these words?
: yes, yell, yawn, yellow, yet, by, why, dry, reply, sky, gym, crystal, pyramid, myth, happy, funny, hairy, smelly, crunchy
Use these games to practice the alternative pronunciation of the 'y' sound

Phonics can be very confusing to some children when we start to find out about the alternative pronunciations – If your child is becoming confused just continue to practice the main phase 5 phonemes.

You should try to read one or two a week.

Continue to practice your Year 1 high frequency words if you haven’t finished. It is important to know which ones you need to practice.
Can you please let me know how you get on? You can just write the list or I have attached a checklist at the bottom. Thank you.
Any queries please just put a message on dojo and I will get back to you.
Literacy – Writing questions
To write questions and identify them in writing.
This lesson includes:
- a video introducing you to questions
- Two activities to do at home
Learn
You can identify questions in writing because they always end with a question mark.
Questions often start with 'W' words: Who, What, When, Where and Why. But, questions can also start with lots of other words. Here are some examples: Can, Could, If, Will and Should.
Watch this short video to find out more.
Activity 1: Spotting the questions
Click the box below and see if you can highlight where the question marks should be.
Activity 2: Let's write some questions
Take a look at the video below about recycling then try the writing some questions yourself.
Find out what you can and can't recycle.
- Using a piece of paper draw four big boxes, or fold your paper into four sections.
- In each section write a question about recycling. Remember to include capital letters and question marks.
- Under each of your questions, write the answer based on what your heard in the video.
- Once you've finished, you can decorate each section with drawings of the item mentioned in the question.
Here is an example:
Can you recycle a pizza box?
Yes you can recycle a pizza box because they are made of paper.
Topic (Wednesday and Thursday)
Today we are going to carry on finding out about Water Safety. Think about what you learned yesterday. Can you play the games to find out what you know? Can you write a poster to help people stay safe around water.
