Activity 1: Read 'And then they came for me' and read aloud
Your first activity for today is the read the poem titled 'And then they came for me'. I would like you to think about:
- What do you like about the poem?
- Is there anything you dislike about it? If so, why?
- Why do you think the poem has become famous?
And then they came for me
First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me
by Martin Niemöller
Martin Niemöller wrote this poem after the Second World War. He believed that he had not done enough to oppose the Nazi Party who had arrested and killed group after group of people.
Activity 2: Non fiction guide to 'Black Lives Matter'
Your next activity is to read a non fiction guide focused on Black Lives Matter. Like normal, I would like you to highlight the key parts of the text.
Following on from all the important information you have read in this guide, I would like you to design a poster which shows the 5 most important things you learnt from the guide. I would like you to consider who you want your AUDIENCE to be, what FORMALITY you are aiming for and what the PURPOSE is for your poster.
Activity 3: Something Happened In Our Town: A Child’s Story About Racial Injustice
As your final activity, I would like you to listen to the reading of the american story, 'Something happened in our town'. Once you have finished listening to the story, I would like you to answer the following questions:
- What message do you think the book is trying to give?
- How well do you think that the book communicates this message?
- What do you think is the best thing about this book?
- Was there anything that surprised you in the book?
- This is an American book. Do you think it is relevant in other countries?
