11:00am - 12:15pm LITERACY/READING
Activity 1: Who was Edward Colston?
Today, you are going to read about Edward Colston. You may have heard about him before but some of you will not know anything about him. You need to read the article about him and I would like you to underline all the key things you read in the article. I would like you to answer the questions below about him:
- Why is Edward Colston known of?
- When did he start running his own business?
- How many people could Colston's ship take at once?
- Did he do any good things in his life? If so, what did he do?
- What are your opinions of Edward Colston?
Activity 2: Colston Statue: Hollow
Your next activity is going to be based around the poem 'Hollow' which is about the statue of Edward Colston, which was located in Bristol. I would like you to listen to the poem and what it says within the poem. I have attached the text version of the poem in case you would like to read along with it or make notes around it. Which is your favourite line in the poem? Why is it your favourite line?
I would like you to go on and answer the questions about Hollow, which I will attach below. Think about your answers before writing them in full sentences.

Activity 3: Creative writing
This is your last activity for literacy today so I would love to see some creativity from you! Firstly, you need to read the story titled 'Brave Molly'. I would like you to think about the story and how it is similar to the poem. What does Molly discover about the monster?
I would like you to use the story planner (attached below) and plan your own story about someone or something that seems powerful but shows weakness or hollow. You DO NOT need to write the story but I would like to see you filling in the sheet below and to see how your story unfolds.
