Activity 1: Read the explanations

Your first activity today is to read a Judge's explanation for a dance routine. The explanation follows on from Kimberly Walsh's dance on Strictly Come Dancing. You need to read the judge's explanation before watching the routine. Once you have read his explanation, I would like you to watch the routine and see how much of the Judge's explanation you can spot in the video.

Now I would like you to read the second Judge's explanation, which follows on from Johnny Ball's routine. You can watch the routine below if you want to as well.

Which judge is the most positive?

Which judge is negative?

Which judge do you agree with? Who did the better routine in your opinion?

 

Activity 2: Highlight and annotate text

Now, you are going to look at the texts in more detail. I am pretty sure we are all not the best dances and there may be language we do not know in the explanations. I would like you to go through both texts and highlight, underline or colour in any:

  • technical language about the dance
  • positive phrases
  • negative phrases
  • any other ways the judges explain their voting

Activity 3: Give your own explanation

It is your turn! You are going to pick between either Stacey Dooley's or Brian Conley's routine. You need to watch the dance and give it a score out of 10. You will need to take some brief notes to help you explain your reason for your score out of 10. Can you have a go at using any technical language in your explanation? Good luck!

balance, footwork, steps, choreography, overextend, technique, crisp, passion, timing, entertaining, personality, transitions, exciting, posture, fluidity, rhythm

 

Persona (how you act during explanation):

nice & supportive grumpy & sharp-tongued, flamboyant & enthusiastic, tough but fair
