French
At St Thomas's the learning of French helps children flourish by fostering cultural understanding, promoting language skills, and developing a sense of global citizenship. It enables them to engage with French-speaking communities, appreciate different cultures, and communicate effectively across borders, broadening their horizons and nurturing a spirit of curiosity and openness.
'Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils' curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world'
At St Thomas's we believe our teaching of French should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.
Kapow Primary's French scheme of work supports us to teach the subject content from the National Curriculum. Our French curriculum aims to instil a love of language learning and an awareness of other cultures.
We want pupils to develop the confidence to communicate in French for practical purposes, using both written and spoken French. Our French curriculum supports the pupils to meet the national curriculum end of Key Stage 2 attainment targets.
Our Golden Threads in French are:
- Speaking and pronunciation
- Listening
- Reading and writing
- Grammar
- Intercultural understanding
Our Long Term Overview shows which units are taught across KS2 in each term.
We have a Progression of Skills document which shows the skills and knowledge that are taught within each year group and how these skills develop to ensure that attainment targets are securely met by the end of KS2.
