11:00am - 12:15pm LITERACY/READING
Activity 1: Read 'Green Vale School Football Team' explanation
Today, football is the theme and the first thing I would like you to do is to read the 'Green Vale School Football Team' explanation. I would like you to underline, circle or highlight reasons why the team is successful in the text.
I would then like you to look at all the reasons and pick the reason you think is the most important for the team's success. Why do you think that?
Activity 2: Adverbials and conjunctions work
Today's grammar focus is to look at adverbials and conjunctions. You should be familiar with what they are and why we use them. However, if you would like a quick recap, it may be useful for you to watch some of the videos below or use the revision cards provided. Once you are happy with your knowledge about adverbials and conjunctions, please can you highlight at least 6 conjunctions and underline 6 adverbials in the 'Green Vale School Football team' explanation.
A conjunction is what we use in sentences to make our sentences longer. They join up all the words in our sentences better.
An adverbial tells us more about a verb, such as: what order? where? when? how?
We can find adverbials anywhere in the sentence, including at the front, which makes them fronted adverbials.

Activity 3: Write an explanation
Now it is your turn! You are now going to think of a team or person that has been successful. They could be a football team, actor, singer, etc. You will need to plan your explanation and research the successes of your chosen team/person. They do not have to be famous, they could be someone you know or in your family.
Once you have planned your explanation, I would like you to use the planning sheet you have used, the conjunctions and adverbial mats and the features of an explanation text to help you write your explanation.
Features of an explanation text:
- Title - telling what needs to be explained
- Introduction (often making a link to the reader)
- Clear layout, e.g. sections or paragraphs
- Bullet points or sub-headings
- Diagrams and illustrations
- Technical vocabulary (often with definitions)
- Present-tense verbs
- Causal language (e.g. because; ‘if…then…’; the reason that; when; so; this results in; this causes; therefore)
- Passive verbs
- Formal connectives (e.g. however, therefore, consequently)
- Usually formal register
- Closing sentence to round off the explanation
12:15pm - 1:15pm LUNCH TIME
1:15pm - 2:30pm FOUNDATION - ART
Today you are going to be looking at exciting paintings. I would like you to try and recreate your own 'Pop Art' inspired by Andy Warhol. Have a look for some ideas and you can always print templates off for your design.
