Mathematics
Multiplication and Division
In multiplication and division, the children will learn 3x, 4x and 8x tables and learn how to divide by 3, 4 and 8. Then using this knowledge the children will apply this in a variety of words problems.
Further Multiplication and Division
The children will learn how to apply these facts to formal columnar methods of long or short multiplication and how to use known division facts to solve 2-digit divided by 1-digit numbers. We will again apply this knowledge to solve word problems, representing them using the bar model.
The children will need to access TTRS to assist with their learning. The children will have individual logins for Times Tables Rock Stars. They can access the app from home on a tablet or through th internet. Please encourage your child to play for 10 minutes a day as by the end of Y3, the children need to be fluent in their 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 8x and 10x tables.
Please click below to access the TTRS website.
English
This half term, the children will be reading two different core text which are 'The Barnabus Project’ by The Fan Brothers and ‘The Tin Forest’ by Helen Ward. Whilst reading these stories, the children will be responding to and learning new language and vocabulary, discussing, debating and analysing the characters, settings and plots. They will be building up to writing their own versions of a brochure and newspaper article but throughout the children will write a range of short texts: instructional writing, descriptions, advertisements, letters of advice and explanation, dialogue, diary entries and shared poems.
In Guided Reading sessions, the children will be using our focus text ‘The BFG’ by Roald Dahl. The children focus on reading comprehension by using a range of questioning techniques to develop their understanding (VIPERS). We will also focus on decoding and fluency if necessary. Children will have opportunities over the week to read independently, read for pleasure or read 1:1 with a member of staff.
Spelling
Every Friday, your child will receive their new spelling list. Please can you help your child to practise and learn their spellings every week. They will be tested the following Friday. The children will be introduced to different methods to help them learn the spelling rules. The children can practise their spellings on spelling shed also.
Please click the link below to access Spelling shed, the children have been given their logins. https://www.edshed.com/en-gb/

Also we will be focusing on understanding how light is reflected from surfaces; understand the dangers of the sun and how to protect our eyes; conduct an experiment to understand how shadows are formed and discover patterns relating to size.
Geography
This half term, we will be learning all the topic ‘UK – Regions, Counties and Cities’. During this topic, the children will use their locational knowledge to locate places on a map using atlases, maps and the internet. We will also look at similarities and differences between human and physical processes and features of different regions and counties, with a particular focus on places close to Bury.
Design and Technology
The first design technology topic will be about ‘Food and Seasonality’. We will explore where are fruit and vegetables are grown and the time of year. We will explain the benefits of seasonal foods, develop cutting and peeling skills. The children will evaluate seasonal ingredients then design a vegetable tart with success criteria and decide what seasonal vegetables they will use in their vegetable tart, make it and then evaluate it.
R.E
Our focus will be:
What do Christians learn from the Creation story?
(Creation/Fall)
Life Education
This term we will be continuing to learn about stereotyping gender and age. We will start our new topic called ‘Health and Wellbeing’. We will create a healthy diary where energetic activities and high-energy food are scheduled for the same day; works in pairs to stretch and sketch poses; understand the different aspects of my identity; identify our own strengths and that we can help other people; describe how we would break a problem down into small, achievable goals; and understand the benefits of healthy eating and dental hygiene.
P.E
This year, 3A’s and 3B’s P.E lessons will take place every Wednesday morning. The focus of the P.E lessons will be Health & Fitness with Circuit Training. The children must come to school wearing their full P.E kit every Wednesday. Earrings must be removed, and a water bottle and outdoor coat is required.
This is the P.E kit your child is required to wear:
- Black shorts/tracksuit bottoms/ leggings
- Red T-shirt
- Pumps or Trainers
Music
Our focus will be: Musical Features
Learn to Play Percussion
Computing
During this term, we will explore tinkering, using loops to show repetition in a program. Also, the planning and making of animation. The children will learn how to program a story and game using the program Scratch.
Reading Books
Reading books will be changed as and when required by your child. If a child finishes their book, they will quiz on the book through ‘Accelerated Reader’ before choosing another book within their ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development). This ensures children are making the optimal amount of progress for their reading needs. The quizzes monitor comprehension and vocabulary, assessing whether the children have understood the book they have read.
It is very important that your child brings this book home and back to school daily as no new books will be allowed home if it is not brought in. It is equally as important that your child reads every evening for at least 10 minutes. This can be independently, with an older sibling or adult.
Please take a look at our Medium-Term Plan.

We will compare and order numbers, as well as counting in 50s and 100s. In addition and subtraction, we will learn some mental strategies to add 1, 10, 100 to any 3-digit number before learning the formal columnar method for adding and subtracting, including any renaming or exchanging necessary. All of this knowledge will then be applied to word problems using the bar model.
